Roles are the first thing anyone reaches for because they are the visible part, but a card built out of them describes her position rather than the person holding it. Facts about choices do the opposite: she went back to school with the house full, she took the job nobody else wanted, she kept a household upright through a decade she had not planned for. If family genuinely is the centre of how she sees herself, keep it in, but write it as work she chose rather than as a title she was given. The test is simple. If the sentence would still be accurate with a different name in it, it is a role and not a fact.

I barely know her — she is my brother’s wife, or a friend’s mother. What can you honestly write?

Narrow the field to what you have actually seen for yourself. You may not know her well, but you know something: she is always the one who is prepared, she remembers everybody’s name, she made you feel welcome at a gathering where you knew nobody else. One observed detail carries further than three warm adjectives, and it removes any risk of claiming a closeness that is not there. After that, keep the good wishes general and the whole thing short — four sentences is ample. Do not guess at her plans, her family arrangements or what this particular decade must feel like from the inside, because a wrong guess is worse than a plain card.

Should the message look ahead to the next decade, or stay with what she has already done?

Both, in that order, and weighted towards the past. What she has done can be checked, which is what gives a milestone message its weight; what comes next is a guess no matter who is making it. Spend most of the card on the record and give the forward-looking part one or two lines at the end, kept modest and concrete: quieter months, time that is genuinely her own, one thing she has been putting off. Avoid prophecy — the best is yet to come reads as filler at 30 and as an odd promise at 70. Avoid instruction as well. Telling her that she can finally relax now is deciding on her behalf what her next ten years are for.

Her achievements are not the visible kind — no title to point at, nothing on a wall. How do you recognize a life like that with facts?

Facts are not the same thing as credentials. Count what she actually did and let the scale do the work: the years of shifts worked around everybody else’s schedule, the relatives she looked after while raising her own, the holidays she has hosted without missing one, the four people in this family who learned to drive in her car. Repetition and duration are facts, and they are usually more impressive written down than they ever felt to live through. The failure mode here is compensating with adjectives — piling on wonderful and selfless because nothing concrete came to mind. If you cannot name one thing she did, ask somebody who can before you write the card.

How do you praise a woman on a big birthday without it sliding into flattery?

Use facts rather than adjectives. Flattery makes claims that cannot be verified — you are amazing, you have not changed at all, you are an inspiration to everyone. Recognition points at something that happened: you went back to school with two kids at home, you kept that department running through three reorganizations, you have hosted every holiday for twenty years. Facts also age better, because in ten years the compliment will read as dated and the fact will still be accurate. A reliable structure is one specific thing she did, one line on what it demonstrates, and one sentence of good wishes. Nothing about how young she looks.

A milestone birthday is not an ordinary one.
