Every joke about a big birthday has already been made \u2014 the wine, the reading glasses, the candles. How do you find one that is not worn out?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nStop making the age the material. The number is the occasion, not the subject: take a trait everybody in the room recognizes and simply stand the milestone next to it, so the joke belongs to that one person and nobody else. The day itself is the other reliable source \u2014 the cake, the folding table, the group chat that has been arguing about the venue for a week. A quick test before you send anything: if the line could be printed on the front of a card in a shop, it is used up. And keep to one joke rather than four, because the point of a good one is to put the birthday person at the centre of the room, not at the edge of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a coworker’s big birthday and I like them but do not know them socially. How funny can you be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nAim the humour at the shared situation rather than at the person. Everything about the workplace is common ground \u2014 the meetings, the calendar, the cake that vanishes in minutes, the message you took three days to answer \u2014 and none of it requires knowing anything private. That keeps the joke safe for an audience that will include people who know them far better than you and people who know them far less. Two things to leave out: anything about their appearance, and anything about what age means for a career. Close with one plain, warm line so the whole message is not made of jokes, and keep it shorter than you would for a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Does the funny message go out on the actual day, or do you save it for the party?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nBoth, but not the same one. The day itself gets something short sent directly \u2014 a line or two, no build-up, timed for whenever they are likely to look at a phone. The longer version belongs wherever the people are, whether that is the card handed over at the table or the two sentences you say standing up. If the celebration has landed on some other weekend, hold the card for the celebration; a card opened alone on a Tuesday and a card opened in front of everyone are doing completely different jobs. The mistake worth avoiding is spending your one good line in a group chat first thing in the morning and then having nothing left when somebody hands you a glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What changes on a milestone is the audience: the card gets read by parents, partners, kids and people from work, and a line that is obviously affectionate between the two of you can look like contempt to somebody who does not know the twenty years behind it. Keep the shorthand, keep the old grievance about the window, drop anything that would need explaining or defending. The closing sentence matters more than usual too, because a card made entirely of insults is the one thing they cannot show to anybody, and a milestone card generally gets shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is it safer to put the joke on yourself rather than on them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is safer, and on a milestone it often works better, because a joke aimed at yourself cannot land as a comment on how they are ageing. The version that does the most work is the one that puts you both on the same side: mine is coming and I intend to handle it far worse than you are, or I have reached the decade where I read the label before buying anything and you got here first. What that avoids is the small hierarchy a joke can create, where one person is the subject and everybody else is the audience. Keep it to one line, though.
