There is no CTrain nearby: bus Route 1 ends at a terminal by the park gates, and other routes serve the neighbourhood. Entry and parking are free, gates open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Boats, skates and train tickets are paid separately. Parking fills fast on summer weekends, with overflow at Baker Park across the river and a shuttle from the May long weekend to Labour Day. Allow two to three hours.

When to visit

Spring is muddy and quiet, good for birdwatching along the water. Summer is the park at full volume: boats, trains, woodsmoke and the wading pool from mid-June. Autumn brings the best light of the year on the cottonwoods, with the boathouse open into late September. Winter is what Bowness is famous for — ice trail, lagoon and crokicurl from about mid-November.

Good to know

John Hextall bought land here in 1908 to build Bowness Estates, an upmarket suburb; the 1911 island transfer bought him his streetcar line, which ran from 1913 until 1950. A carousel and dance pavilion arrived in 1919, the tea house in 1923, and Canada’s first floating fountain in 1928. On a fine weekend 25,000 people came, with 28 streetcars laid on. The carousel moved to Heritage Park in 1969 and the Funland rides closed in 1988. A redevelopment begun in 2012 was buried by the June 2013 flood under up to 1.5 metres of silt; the west half reopened in 2014, the east in 2016.

<span class="ez-toc-section"
