An $11.9-million rebuild carried out between 2014 and 2017 rearranged the entire park around one central hill, and the result is one of the city&#8217;s most generous free destinations: a full water park, a hillside playscape and a cricket pitch, with no ticket booth anywhere on the site.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lazy river<\/strong> \u2014 Calgary&#8217;s first outdoor one, looping gently beside the wading pool and open to anyone who simply walks up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discovery Stream spray park<\/strong> \u2014 a zero-depth pad themed on grassland, with showering poppies, tall grasses, giant dew drops and interactive weirs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The playscape<\/strong> \u2014 a double cable zip line, a rideable concrete wave, and concrete and metal slides set directly into the hillside.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lookout Hill<\/strong> \u2014 the park&#8217;s landmark mound, with long views across the northeast in summer and a busy toboggan run all winter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tandoor oven shelter<\/strong> \u2014 a covered picnic area built around a tandoor, designed for how the surrounding communities actually cook.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grant MacEwan grove<\/strong> \u2014 a gazebo standing among ninety trees planted on the park&#8217;s opening day in 1990.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Everything radiates outward from the central hill, linked by paved trails, gravel paths and one inclined route built for wheels and slower walkers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spray park, lazy river and wading pool, mid-June to Labour Day, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>The playscape, plus a natural playground on the north side and an accessible playground to the south<\/li>\n<li>Cricket pitch, soccer field, three tennis courts and a half basketball and sport court<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor skating rink through the winter and a City-designated toboggan hill<\/li>\n<li>Fitness stations, bike racks, drinking fountains, seasonal washrooms and a change room<\/li>\n<li>Three bookable picnic shelters, BBQ areas, a seasonal concession and the &#171;Seed Pod&#187; artwork<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Families with toddlers<\/strong> \u2014 the spray pad is zero-depth and gate-free, so nobody is left watching from the sidelines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Older kids<\/strong> \u2014 the double zip line, the spinning saucer swing and the hillside slides absorb an entire afternoon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extended families<\/strong> \u2014 book a shelter, fire up the tandoor and cook for twenty people in a single sitting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cricketers<\/strong> \u2014 this was Calgary&#8217;s ninth pitch, built for a league that has been playing in the city for more than a century.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Winter sledders<\/strong> \u2014 the slope is one of the City&#8217;s officially sanctioned toboggan runs rather than an improvised one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plane spotters<\/strong> \u2014 approaches to the international airport pass low over the hilltop on the right wind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park sits inside the Castleridge community in the northeast, a short bus ride from the Blue Line CTrain at either McKnight\u2013Westwinds or Whitehorn; routes 21, 43 and 55 all serve the area. There are two free lots, a larger one on the north side and a smaller one to the south, plus bike racks near the water park. Entry costs nothing, the park is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and two hours covers the water park comfortably \u2014 closer to half a day once the playscape wins.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mid-June to Labour Day is the headline season: the water park runs 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and mornings are by far the quietest. Spring belongs to the courts, the cricket pitch and the walking loops as the grass comes back. Autumn is the calmest stretch on the hill, with clear light over the northeast and shelters easy to book. After the first heavy snow the slope fills with toboggans, the paths stay open year-round, and the outdoor rink is flooded for skating.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Prairie Winds opened on 8 September 1990, marked by a gazebo set in a grove of ninety trees planted for Grant MacEwan&#8217;s ninetieth birthday \u2014 the Alberta writer, historian and former lieutenant-governor whose name the grove still carries. The 2014\u20132017 rebuild was designed explicitly around the northeast&#8217;s cultural mix: wider accessible paths for older visitors, oversized picnic shelters for extended families, the tandoor oven, and a cricket pitch that replaced an aging ball diamond.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Kites, drones, balloons and model planes are all prohibited here, because the international airport is immediately adjacent.<\/li>\n<li>Bring water shoes: both the lazy river bed and the spray pad are textured concrete underfoot.<\/li>\n<li>The seating area on top of the hill has been fenced while new grass establishes, so plan picnics lower down the slope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Questions_answers\"><\/span>Questions &amp; answers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is there an entry fee?<\/strong> No. The water park, playscape, playgrounds and courts are all free, with no tickets or wristbands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When does the water park run?<\/strong> From mid-June to Labour Day, daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there washrooms?<\/strong> Yes, including a seasonal washroom and change room beside the pool, plus drinking fountains through the park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I book a picnic shelter?<\/strong> Yes, through the City. Permit holders have priority, including for the shelter with the tandoor oven.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it stroller and wheelchair friendly?<\/strong> Largely \u2014 paved trails, a zero-depth spray pad and a dedicated accessible playground on the south side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can we fly a kite?<\/strong> No. Airborne devices of any kind are banned here because of the airport next
