It is one of Canada&#8217;s largest urban parks, and the scale is the point: you can walk for an hour along the water and hear nothing but current, wind in the poplars and birdsong, with the suburbs somewhere above the valley rim and entirely out of sight.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sikome Lake<\/strong> \u2014 a man-made swimming lake with a sand beach and a gently shelving bottom, staffed and open through the summer season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bow Valley Ranche House<\/strong> \u2014 a two-storey brick house built in 1896 for cattleman William Roper Hull, now a restaurant and the park&#8217;s heritage centrepiece.<\/li>\n<li><strong>More than 80 km of pathways<\/strong> \u2014 roughly 30 km paved and 50 km of shale, running the length of the valley and linking every day-use area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bebo Grove<\/strong> \u2014 a dense white spruce forest at the western end, shaded and noticeably cooler than the open flats even in July.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lafarge Meadows<\/strong> \u2014 reclaimed gravel pits rebuilt into a network of engineered wetlands, now some of the best waterfowl habitat in the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bow River boat launch<\/strong> \u2014 among the largest in Alberta, giving paddlers and anglers access to the river from spring into autumn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is not a single green square but a chain of day-use areas strung along the creek, each with its own character \u2014 deep forest at one end, open meadow and river channel at the other.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A visitor centre with trail maps, exhibits and park staff<\/li>\n<li>Picnic sites, firepits and bookable group shelters<\/li>\n<li>Playgrounds, seasonal concessions and a summer bakery caf\u00e9<\/li>\n<li>The Artisan Gardens and an adjacent golf course<\/li>\n<li>Washrooms and paved parking at every main entrance<\/li>\n<li>A mountain bike skills park near one of the eastern lots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 a beach afternoon at Sikome, then a flat, stroller-friendly walk along the creek to the ranch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cyclists<\/strong> \u2014 an uninterrupted paved run from the western forest to the river, plus marked single track and a skills park.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anglers<\/strong> \u2014 the Bow is a world-class trout river; a provincial licence and the current regulations apply.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birders<\/strong> \u2014 more than 200 species recorded, from great blue herons and bald eagles to great horned owls in the spruce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Winter visitors<\/strong> \u2014 cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the western trails whenever the snow holds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History travellers<\/strong> \u2014 the ranch, the gardens and interpretive signs covering thousands of years of valley life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The valley borders a long row of southern neighbourhoods \u2014 Woodbine and Shawnee at the western end, Canyon Meadows and Deer Run through the middle, Cranston and Douglasdale where the creek meets the river. The Red Line CTrain leaves you about ten minutes&#8217; walk from the park at its Fish Creek station, and several city bus routes reach gates along the north and south rims. Entry and parking are free everywhere; only the swimming lake carries a seasonal admission. Day-use areas open at 8 a.m. and close in the evening, with shorter hours from autumn through winter. Give yourself two hours for a single area; walking the valley end to end is a full day.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is loud and wet: meltwater in the creek, prairie crocus on the dry banks, and waterfowl dropping into the wetlands on their way north. Summer belongs to the beach and the picnic tables, and hot weekends fill the eastern lots by mid-morning, so come early. Autumn is the valley&#8217;s finest hour \u2014 aspen and balsam poplar turn gold, the crowds thin, and deer move openly at dusk. Winter clears the paved network for walkers and skiers, and with the canopy bare, owls, woodpeckers and beaver workings along the ice are far easier to pick out.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>People have lived in this valley for roughly 8,500 years. Bison pounds \u2014 drive lanes and corrals built to take whole herds \u2014 were in use here from around 2500 BC right through to the 1800s. European settlement came late and moved fast: the Glenn family arrived in 1873 and within a few years had dug what is recognised as Alberta&#8217;s first irrigation project, and from 1889 the Shaws ran a woollen mill nearby, the first industry in the province. William Roper Hull built the brick ranch house in 1896 and irrigated hundreds of acres of hay, then sold the operation to cattle baron Pat Burns in 1902. The land stayed in family hands until Alberta bought it in 1973, and the park opened to the public in 1975.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Deer and coyotes are common throughout the valley \u2014 keep well back, leash your dog, and never feed or approach wildlife.<\/li>\n<li>Carry a trail map or download one before you set out: the network is long, and signage between day-use areas is sparse.<\/li>\n<li>Low flats and creek crossings can flood after heavy rain or a fast spring melt; check conditions before planning a through-walk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Questions_answers\"><\/span>Questions &amp; answers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is the park free?<\/strong> Yes \u2014 entry and all parking cost nothing. The only charge is seasonal admission to the swimming lake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I swim?<\/strong> At Sikome during its summer season only. The creek and the Bow River are not designated swimming areas, and the river runs cold and fast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are dogs allowed?<\/strong> Yes, on leash throughout the park, but not at the aquatic facility. Coyote activity makes a loose dog a genuine risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long does it take to walk across?<\/strong> The valley runs about 19 km east to west, so a full traverse is a day&#8217;s outing; most visitors cover one or two areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it good for cycling?<\/strong> Very \u2014 paved pathway end to end plus marked single track, though bikes are kept out of the beach and visitor centre areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will I see wildlife?<\/strong> Often: deer, coyotes, beavers and a long list of birds. Nothing is guaranteed, and the sensible approach is to watch from a distance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<\/div>\n<section id=\"entity-gallery\"
