Prince’s Island Park — downtown’s accidental island

Few downtowns own an island. Calgary got one by accident: a lumber company cut a channel to float logs to its mill, and the Bow River finished the job. Twenty hectares of poplar and lawn now sit minutes from the towers, reachable only on foot or by bike.

Getting there & practical

The park lies in Eau Claire, on the northern rim of downtown, with a northern crossing to Crescent Heights. The downtown CTrain stretch is free to ride and leaves a ten-minute walk; several bus routes stop nearby. Entry is free, gates open daily 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Vehicle access is restricted, so leave the car in the surrounding blocks. Allow an hour for the loop, half a day during a festival.

When to visit

Spring runs high and brown under the bridges, then greens fast. Summer is peak: festivals, long northern evenings, poplar shade against the prairie sun. Autumn is the connoisseur’s season — gold leaves, thin crowds, migrating birds on the wetland. Winter freezes the lagoon into a rink, though a February chinook can soften it overnight.

Peter Anthony Prince came west from Quebec in 1886 to run the Eau Claire and Bow River Lumber Company, which cut a channel to float logs down from the Kananaskis; the current widened it until an island existed. He founded the Calgary Water Power Company in 1889 and built Calgary’s first hydroelectric plant by 1893. The mill ran until 1944, and in 1947 the City bought the island from his family and named the park for him. The June 2013 flood submerged it entirely.

• Weekday mornings are the quiet window — this is downtown’s busiest green space.
• River Café takes reservations and closes for part of January.
