In the Greater Forest Lawn district of southeast Calgary, a twenty-hectare stormwater pond has quietly become one of the largest bodies of water in the city — ringed by a walking loop, a rose garden, a windmill and a forest planted for newborns.

Two self-guided walking routes of about 2.5 km each — one on the on-leash side, one through the off-leash side — link the lake’s viewpoints, plantings and interpretive stops.

Getting there & practical

The park occupies a broad block in Greater Forest Lawn, southeast of downtown. MAX Purple bus rapid transit runs the length of the district and stops within walking distance; two parking lots serve the park, one west and one east, both with accessible stalls. Entry is free and the grounds open early morning to late evening, though the park can close when heavy rain fills the retention basin. Allow an hour for the loop, two with children.

When to visit

Spring brings migrating waterfowl onto open water and the first green on the poplars. Summer is prime: long evenings, roses in bloom and every playground in use. Autumn turns the aspen and poplar gold and empties the loop out. Winter is windy and wide open — best for a brisk circuit and the toboggan hills.

Good to know

The park was named in 1995 for the Ellis family, who left Ontario in 1912 when Shepard S. Ellis, his wife and their nine children homesteaded west, farming around Calgary, Conrich and Chestermere across five generations. The lake is engineered infrastructure — storm drains from surrounding neighbourhoods empty into it. From 2003 to 2025 the shoreline hosted GlobalFest, the international fireworks and multicultural festival; in 2026 it moved to Spruce Meadows after twenty-three seasons here.

Visitor tips

• The loop is fully exposed — bring sun cover in July and a wind layer any month.
• Keep off the ice: this is a stormwater basin, not a maintained skating lake.
• Use the west lot for the sundial and windmill, the east lot for the inclusive playground.

Is GlobalFest still held here? No — after twenty-three years at the lake, the festival moved to Spruce Meadows for 2026.

Can you swim or fish in the lake? No. It is a stormwater retention pond built to hold neighbourhood runoff, not a recreational lake.

Is there an off-leash area? Yes, in the southeast corner, with its own self-guided route of roughly 2.5 km.
