Pearce Estate Park — a rebuilt wetland in a bend of the Bow River

Twenty-one hectares of cattail marsh, poplar forest and hatchery-fed streams sit inside a tight curve of the Bow River east of downtown Calgary — half nature reserve, half working fish farm, and the best place in the city to watch how water behaves.

Getting there & practical

The park lies in Inglewood, immediately west of the Calgary Zoo on the southeast edge of the inner city. MAX Purple bus rapid transit and local routes stop within an easy walk, the riverside pathway brings cyclists straight in, and a shared lot serves both park and station. The grounds are free, open early morning to late evening. Bow Habitat Station is a separate paid attraction with shorter daytime hours, closed Sundays, Mondays and statutory holidays. Budget two to three hours.

When to visit

Spring is loud with returning waterfowl and meltwater in the channels. Summer is fullest: the trout pond opens in mid-May and the poplar canopy shades the trails. Autumn turns the riverine forest gold and empties the boardwalks. Winter locks the marsh into quiet, animal-tracked white — good for walking and cross-country skiing.

Good to know

The land was donated around 1929 by William Pearce (1848–1930), the Dominion lands official nicknamed «Czar of the West,» who championed prairie irrigation and built a sandstone home here called Bow Bend Shack; it was demolished in 1957. The wetland was reconstructed and opened to visitors in 2004. Harvie Passage, built to tame a weir dating from 1908, was destroyed by the 2013 flood and reopened in 2018.

Visitor tips

• Adults need a valid Alberta sportfishing licence to cast in the trout pond.
• Check the Discovery Centre’s hours — it closes long before the park does.
• Stay out of the water at Harvie Passage; those channels are for equipped paddlers.

Is the park free to visit? Yes — trails, wetland and trout pond cost nothing; only the Discovery Centre charges admission.

How long does the wetland loop take? About forty minutes at a slow pace, longer if you stop at every viewing platform.

Can you swim or wade at Harvie Passage? No. It is engineered whitewater with serious drops, meant for experienced paddlers in proper gear.
